Flo-what? Flocabulary!!

A few weeks ago, I came across this website that teaches vocabulary through engaging videos….

hip-hop style!! What is this great website you ask?? Flocabulary!!! Read below to learn more about Flocabulary, see how I use it in my classroom, and sign up for your FREE trial!

Some Fun Facts About Flocabulary:
– Flocabulary is a web-based learning program for all grades and subjects that uses educational hip-hop music to engage students and increase achievement.
– Teachers in more than 50,000 schools have used Flocabulary’s standards-based videos, instructional activities and formative assessments to develop core literacy skills and supplement instruction across the curriculum.
– With new and expanding resources for writing and project-based learning, Flocabulary is a springboard into student-centered instruction. Check out the Writing Academic Rhymes resources to help guide students in their own educational rap-writing!
– Flocabulary offers more than 700 videos with accompanying classroom resources and formative assessments to support instruction in math, science, social studies, ELA, vocabulary, current events and life skills, with new content every week.

Flocabulary is super simple to use! There’s a drop down menu with all the video categories or you can easily scroll down and just click on the section you need!
Here’s an example for Science: We’ve been talking about force and motion the last couple weeks in science. I went to Flocabulary, pulled up the Elementary Science videos, and there was one for force and motion! The engaging, short video was a great opener to our science lesson that day!

For our first Flocabulary video and lesson, I chose one from their Life Skills section. It was all about frustration – perfect for a social skills lesson!

They were so quiet while watching this video! You could’ve heard a pin drop…and that’s not something you say every day about a room full of Kinder kids!!

After we watched the video, we discussed what it means to feel frustrated. My students gave me examples of times they felt frustrated and things we could do to calm down from that.

Another great part about Flocabulary are the lesson resources they give you! We used their frustration page to draw things that make us frustrated. Then, they wrote about what they could do to feel better.

This student said he feels frustrated when his tablet battery is dead! (I wanted to tell him that he’s super lucky to have a tablet!!!) Later on he added a happy face to show that he feels better when it’s all charged up…so cute!

This girl told me that she feels frustrated when she has to wake up early!
Best answer ever!!!!!

I love this student’s way of making herself feel better… tell them to STOP! Sure, there are other ways to get over your frustration, but we’ve worked hard on learning to use our words to tell how we’re feeling, so I’m proud of this one!

Now that you’ve learned more about Flocabulary, here’s your chance to try it out for yourself! By signing up now, you’ll get a FREE 75 day trial. But, don’t wait!! You only have until February 29th to get your extended free trial!

Pizza Co. practices math skills like: one-to-one correspondence, subtraction, money, and fractions. I absolutely LOVE that we get to work on basic subtraction and fractions (put toppings on half of the pie). Another thing I LOVE about this game is that I'm able to put it on junior mode so she can do most of it with just a little assistance.

This is going to be a favorite game for a long time!!
